Marcus at Rex’s Speed Shop (RSS) has supplied us with a top quality ignition system for our Yamaha XT500 motor.
It is actually the race version (stronger spark) but also has the ability to power lights if we chose to run this bike on the road. The CDI has an XT500 specific ignition timing curve. RSS’s focus is always on performance and the first step they made was to do away with the mechanical advance unit and contact breakers to give full electronic timing control. The standard Yamaha flywheel is used.
RSS’s Full Race electronic ignition with its ‘Dual Power’ source coils give significantly more spark energy than other self generating ignition kits. The system features two source windings optimised for specific RPM ranges.
The improved spark helps both hot and cold starts and sparks from as little as 150 RPM. They’ve even included a new high power HT coil.
Another major bonus is the timing ‘trim’ function on the CDI unit which means fine tuning is easily done without having to remove the flywheel.
